![]() | Andrew Lamb CEO (Chief Executive Officer) andrew.lamb [at] ewb-uk.org | Andrew's first taste of engineering in international development was at a talk run by a fledging student club in Cambridge called Engineers Without Borders. He was a second year undergraduate in 2002, and very soon got involved in fundraising. After graduating, Andrew worked with the University of Cambridge Office for Community Affairs and co-founded the Humanitarian Centre in his spare time. He worked for more than three years with disaster relief organisation RedR, including working at their office in Nairobi. He is the technical editor of the UNESCO Engineering Report and a Visiting Lecturer for the Engineering and Technology Board. Andrew became Chief Executive of EWB-UK in December 2008 after winning a World of Difference grant from the Vodafone Foundation. |
![]() | Katie Cresswell-Maynard Research katie.cresswell-maynard [at] ewb-uk.org | Katie got involved with EWB whilst studying at Durham University back in 2006 when the branch first started and fundraising revolved around selling vodka jellies in the Student Union. The branch evolved to tackle greater things and Katie's greatest achievement with the branch was an International Development Conference whilst she was president in her final year. Her interest in the Research Programme sprung from her final year project and developed during the year after graduation when she became a Research Team member and helped with the Annual Research Conference earlier this year. Whilst away in far off lands the opportunity to become the Manager of this fantastic programme arose and luckily for Katie, she got the job! She now dedicates her time to the Research Programme and enjoys every minute! |
![]() | Fran Talavera Training fran.talavera [at] ewb-uk.org | Fran got her first taste for International Development work when she spent a year working with street children in Peru. While working at a refuge for children in Cusco, she helped set up a separate project to provide them with home education and vocational training. Through this work she gained a real insight into the workings (and frustrations!) of the systems in Peru and it spurred her on to want to do more. After returning to the UK to complete her degree she worked for a time as a Teaching Assistant, but wanted to move into International Development. While volunteering with the Humanitarian Centre, Fran found the perfect opportunity to combine her interests by becoming EWB-UK's Training Programme Manager. Alongside working for EWB-UK, Fran is studying for a Certificate of Higher Education in International Development. |
![]() | Miriam Hansen Outreach miriam.hansen [at] ewb-uk.org | Mim spent her gap year working with Tearfund as a regional youth and student co-ordinator, and this year had the opportunity to visit development projects in Thailand and Cambodia. Mim joined the EWB-Edinburgh branch in September 2005, attending the first Tri-disciplinary training course in 2006, then became branch secretary in 2007 and co-president in 2008. Whilst on the Edinburgh branch committee she received a bursary from EWB to teach Engineering skills to communities in Poipet, Cambodia as part of the branch project DIEEM (Developing Intermediate Engineering Education Material). Mim has now been appointed Outreach Co-ordinator and is keen to inspire and educate young people across the UK about the benefits of Engineering and the fundamental role it plays in development work. |
![]() | Ellie Cosgrave Education ellie.cosgrave [at] ewb-uk.org | Ellie is a recent graduate of Bristol University where she studied Civil Engineering. During her time there she was heavily involved with the EWB-Bristol branch. Her interest in education started when she undertook her third year research project entitled ‘Engineering Education for Sustainable Development' which investigated ways in which universities could better incorporate sustainability into their engineering curricular. Her experience in this led to her appointment as the chair of a committee that investigated student opinion on the content of a master's degree in sustainable development. During her time as Education Co-ordinator for EWB-UK she has continued to work with students and lecturers, encouraging universities to include relevant and inspiring material in their undergraduate curricular. |
![]() | Joanne Lambert Bursaries joanne.lambert [at] ewb-uk.org | Joanne is a recent graduate of Cambridge University where she studied Civil and Environmental Engineering. Volunteering in Venezuela and Mozambique confirmed her passion for development work, and so she was very excited when EWB-UK granted her a bursary for her 4th year project on waste management in rural Bhutan. When she came back from Bhutan she got stuck in with EWB, encouraging 30 people to "Go Vegan" for a month to raise money for EWB-Cambridge, organising training days, making loads of great friends and running the Cambridge Bursary panel. Joanne has taken on the role of Bursary Co-ordinator this year in order to help remove some of the financial barriers to getting involved in international development and to further her involvement and fun with EWB-UK. |
![]() | Katie Goode Placements katie.goode [at] ewb-uk.org | Whilst studying Civil Engineering at Nottingham University Katie got involved with the local branch, first as the treasurer and then as president. After graduation she went on an EWB-UK placement to Pune, India, where she worked with an NGO who undertake slum mapping. She worked on analysis using GIS software and publishing the information on Google earth. She now works for Atkins Water and Environment on projects such as the design of sustainable drainage systems, flood risk assessments and wastewater network modelling. Katie's role on the national exec is the Placements Programme Co-ordinator. Her work includes developing possible placements with new partners, keeping track of budgets, and managing the rest of the programme team. |
![]() | Mark Williams Professional Network mark.williams [at] ewb-uk.org | Mark Williams is a Chemical Engineer from Melbourne, Australia who is currently working an energy consultant in Surrey, UK. Mark has previously had experience with EWB in Australia through his role as chair of Young Engineers Victoria where he was able to implement an environmental program including making the organisation carbon neutral. Mark was very eager to get involved with EWB-UK and be a part of a group of dedicated staff and volunteers all looking to make a positive difference in the world through the skills of local engineers. Mark sees the future of the EWB-UK PN as an expanding group of professionals looking to support EWB-UK with their knowledge as well as gain useful skills, information and an insight to International Development for themselves. |
![]() | Michael "Woody" Woodrow Branch Support woody [at] ewb-uk.org | Woody, as he's more commonly known, had his first EWB experience playing a game of barefoot bowls with a cold beer in his hand. During his year abroad at the University of Queensland he not only took part in crazy-fun events but also got involved with designing sustainable latrines for rural Papua New Guinea. On his return to Scotland he assumed the role of Edinburgh branch President and took the opportunity to expand and improve the society. Now, as the national Branch Support Co-ordinator, his role is to help every branch president do the same. He studied a final year thesis on water sanitation and presented his work as a keynote speaker at the 2009 EWB-UK Research Conference. |
